RICHARD J. OLIVER EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

Your artwork often intertwines with prevalent sociopolitical themes. With recent societal instabilities, has this influenced a change in your artistic expression?

Indeed, my art has evolved in response to these turbulent times. Initially, my pieces directly tackled societal issues, mirroring the harsh realities faced by the youth, a perspective heavily influenced by my parental instincts. However, as I navigated the complexities of our current sociopolitical climate, I experienced a profound shift. Rather than adding to the prevailing darkness, I've embraced the responsibility of injecting light and beauty into my work. This shift, though challenging, stems from a conscious effort to protect my mental well-being and set a positive example as a parent and artist. Inspired by the Dalai Lama's philosophy, I've adopted a more meditative approach, consciously choosing to seek beauty amidst the prevailing gloom. This artistic evolution represents a deliberate act of will, acknowledging the importance of maintaining a healthy perspective for the benefit of my family and the broader community.

How has your journey as a father influenced the transformation of your art?

Fatherhood significantly reshaped my artistic direction. Initially, I believed that confronting societal issues through my art would safeguard my family's future. However, I realized this approach often reinforced negativity. Now, I prioritize nurturing my family and engaging in lighter, more joyful expressions through my art. This shift reflects my understanding that art, often a luxury, cannot single-handedly foster spiritual depth or societal change. My art has evolved from a career to a vocation, with a newfound focus on creating beauty and finding ways to contribute beyond the artistic realm. This approach has helped me rediscover the joy and playfulness in my work, seeking a balance that aligns with my personal and professional aspirations.

You are from Wales and now live in Los Angeles. What sparked a move from where you were raised and has it had an impact on your artistic vision?

Relocating to Los Angeles, initially driven by the appealing climate and vibrant Pop Surreal art scene, marked a significant turn in my artistic journey. This move coincided with a period of maturation and reflection in my life. As a young artist, I felt my voice was loud yet lacked depth due to limited life experience. Returning to painting in my later years, I found a richer, more nuanced voice, greatly influenced by the local art scene. This environment fostered experimentation with various techniques and mediums, allowing my style to evolve in response to my personal and familial experiences, rather than merely reacting to them.

You believe in using your art for philanthropic purposes. What are your thoughts about the healing powers of art? Has art therapeutically impacted you personally?

My perspective on art's healing and philanthropic power is constantly evolving. At times, I feel compelled to utilize my artistic talents more effectively for societal good. I'm inspired by how certain animations and films, like 'Happy Feet,' successfully address profound human and environmental issues. While I believe my paintings haven't fully realized this potential yet, I'm committed to exploring ways to make a meaningful impact. On a personal level, my recent solo exhibition, 'Immersion,' was a significant step in using art for self-healing. This collection delved into themes of dissociation, isolation, and the struggle for a mind-body union. Through this artistic process, I sought to convey the complexities of human existence, focusing on simplicity, harmony, and emotional resonance. This body of work represents my journey towards embracing life's sorrows and beauty, aiming to evoke a sense of interconnectedness and compassion in the viewer.
